Losing the only key feels like a tow truck problem. It almost never is. Here is what actually happens and what it costs.
- No tow neededA mobile automotive locksmith comes to the car and makes the key on site. The dealership route usually starts with a tow.
- Proof of ownershipHave your ID and the registration or title ready. A legitimate locksmith will ask for both.
- Know your key typeBasic cut keys, transponder chip keys and smart fobs all price differently.
- Typical costsBasic keys run $50 to $180, transponder keys roughly $150 to $350 with programming, smart fobs more.
- The spare ruleThe cheapest key you will ever buy is the spare you cut before you lose the first one.
Step One, Ten Calm Minutes
Before anyone gets paid, retrace the day carefully. Check the obvious pockets, the bags you carried, the car itself through the windows, and every place you stopped to pay for something, then call the last store or restaurant you visited, since lost keys often end up behind a counter. If the keys are visibly sitting inside the car, that is a different and considerably cheaper job. Our vehicle lockout service opens the door without touching the key at all.
If ten minutes of searching turns up nothing, treat the key as gone and decide who is making the replacement, because waiting another day rarely brings it back and leaves a working key loose in the world.
Step Two, Get These Ready Before You Call
Three documents make a lost key call fast. The first is your government photo identification, and the second is the registration or title in your name, which ACME Locksmith says is what is typically required along with matching identification. The third is the vehicle identification number, the 17 character code printed on the dashboard near the windshield and usually on the driver door jamb.
Also have the year, make and model ready, and know whether the car starts with a turn key or a push button, because that single detail tells the locksmith which programming equipment to bring.
Then make one more phone call. Consumer Reports advises checking your warranty, automobile insurance or roadside assistance membership, since some of them cover lost or damaged keys, and a five minute conversation can noticeably reduce the final bill.
Step Three, Locksmith or Dealership
The dealership can certainly sell you a key, but it will usually require the car towed to the service department, several days of waiting for the key to arrive, and a bill meaningfully higher than mobile service. A mobile automotive locksmith cuts the key from your VIN, programs the transponder at the curb, and has you driving the same day. We handle keys for more than 40 brands across the valley, from Toyota keys to Honda keys and Ford keys.
A small number of late model luxury vehicles do remain dealer only, and an honest locksmith tells you that on the phone instead of at your car. Consumer Reports notes that a mobile locksmith can replace many fobs, cutting and programming them right in the driveway.

| Key type | How it is made | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Basic cut key, no chip | Cut from the VIN code | $50 to $180 |
| Transponder chip key | Cut, then chip paired to the car | $150 to $350 with programming |
| Remote head key or flip key | Cut, chip paired, remote synced | Quoted by year and model |
| Smart fob, push button start | Fob programmed to the car | More than a transponder key |
| Any type, nights or weekends | Same work after hours | Usually adds $25 to $75 |
What Happens When the Technician Arrives
The technician verifies that you own the vehicle, generates the correct cut from the identification number, and cuts the new key on the truck. For transponder keys and fobs, specialized programming equipment pairs the new chip to your car, and then everything gets tested, including the doors, trunk and ignition, before the technician leaves.
Programming matters for security as well. ACME Locksmith says the process typically deletes lost keys from the vehicle's memory, and we remove the old key wherever the system allows it, so whoever finds your old key cannot start your car.
Most lost key calls wrap up within the hour once the technician is at the car. You hear the price before any work starts, and our automotive locksmith team runs 24/7 across Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas.
Step Four, Never Do This Again
While the equipment is already out is the perfect time to cut a spare, because a second key made during the same visit costs far less than the next emergency. Consumer Reports points out that most fobs owners can program themselves require two working keys, so a car with only one key leaves you without a do it yourself option.
Keep the spare at home rather than in the car or a magnetic box under the bumper, and save the identification number and your key type in your phone. If your fob contains a hidden metal blade, learn where it is so a dead battery never leaves you stranded.
Questions We Get Asked
Can you really make a key with no original to copy?
Yes. The key cuts are generated from the vehicle identification number once you show proof of ownership, so no original is needed. That is the normal case for lost key calls. The car does need to be on site when a chip or fob has to be programmed to it.
Do you program key fobs and push button start keys?
Yes, for most makes and models. Tell us the year, make and model when you call and we will confirm coverage and price before dispatch. If your vehicle is one of the few that only the dealer can program, you will hear that on the phone, before anyone drives out.
How long does a lost key call take?
Most are done within the hour once the technician arrives, and arrival is usually 20 to 30 minutes in most of the valley. Complex smart keys can take longer, and we will tell you that up front so you can plan the rest of your day.
Will my car insurance pay for a lost key?
Sometimes. Some auto policies, extended warranties and roadside plans cover lost or damaged keys, so call your insurer or plan before you pay. Keep the itemized receipt from the locksmith, since most claims ask for it, and ask whether a deductible applies first.
